One Missed Day Doesn't Erase a Streak. All-or-Nothing Thinking Says It Does.

All-or-nothing thinking is a well-documented cognitive distortion: treating a single lapse as total failure. In one study, dieters who merely believed they'd eaten a larger slice of pizza went on to eat significantly more cookies afterward, even though nothing had actually gone wrong yet. The same pattern is what turns one missed habit day into a lost week.
Aaron Beck (1963) first catalogued the biased thought patterns that would later be called cognitive distortions - systematic ways the mind convinces you of things that aren't quite true. All-or-nothing thinking is one of the most common: sorting a result into total success or total failure, with nothing in between. Applied to a habit, it sounds like this: one missed day means the streak is broken, the week is ruined, and starting over is the only honest option.
It's a distortion, not an observation, and there's research showing it doesn't even need a real failure to trigger.

The pizza study didn't need an actual failure
Polivy, Herman, and Deo (2010) served dieting participants a slice of pizza next to a comparison slice that made it look either bigger or smaller than it was. Afterward, everyone was offered cookies. Dieters who'd been led to believe they'd eaten the bigger slice - regardless of what they'd actually eaten - went on to eat significantly more cookies than dieters who believed their slice was smaller.
Nothing about their actual calorie intake had changed between conditions. Only the belief that they'd already blown it changed, and that belief alone was enough to trigger more eating, not less. Researchers call this the what-the-hell effect: once a lapse feels certain, however small or imagined, the perceived cost of continuing to try drops to zero.
Why a single lapse escalates
Addiction researchers describe the same mechanism under a different name: the abstinence violation effect, first named by Marlatt and Gordon in 1985 and updated by Witkiewitz and Marlatt (2004). A lapse only turns into a full relapse through a few specific moves - blaming it on a stable personal flaw rather than a specific moment, losing confidence that you can recover, and letting guilt make continuing feel pointless. Take away those moves, and a lapse tends to stay a lapse.
None of that requires the lapse to be large. It requires the story about the lapse to be all-or-nothing.
The math the distortion skips
Run the actual numbers and the story falls apart fast. Thirty days with one miss is 29 out of 30 - about 97% consistency, which is a strong month by any reasonable standard. All-or-nothing thinking doesn't average; it rounds the whole month down to the one day that went wrong.
